What a great tool! This is the first electric hand planer I’ve ever used, and I’m surprised at how useful it is. I’m a novice woodworker, which mostly means that my work is still a bit imprecise, with lots of uneven surfaces and joints that don’t quite match. Before getting this tool, I gave my orbital sander quite a workout and went through a lot of 80-grit paper. But this tool makes the process vastly easier. It’s powerful enough to cut troughs 1/8″ deep, but when it’s set on a shallow setting (e.g., 1/64), it functions like a super belt-sander. I built a work bench using scrap wood to build a butcher-block top. After gluing and clamping all of these pieces of crappy wood together, the surface was quite uneven with lots of glue residue. With this planer, I was able to get it completely level and smooth in about 30 minutes. I can’t imagine how long the sander would have taken.It’s very easy to use….the only thing you have to pay attention to is the cutting depth. As others have mentioned, the chip collection bag fills quickly. I just gave up on it and let the chips fly…the big clean up later was less worth than dealing with the little bag.The only other minor complaint is that the depth control knob needs to have a lock. Since the planer is controlled by your front hand holding onto the knob,it’s a bit too easy to twist the knob during use which changes the cutting depth.
I purchased this based on price because it is a tool that does not see a lot of use,but let me tell you that you will not be disappointed by this planer.I have been adding on a sun room on to the back of the house. Most of the lumber was good grade but as I was getting close to the end I decided to use some old lumber I had in the garage instead of buying more. A few of the 2x4s I used were a little warped and twisted. I went a head and used them for the framing on the old brick wall. When putting up the paneling I noticed the twisting was worse than I thought. Thinking how to work around this I decided to use the planer.This resulted in planing almost 2/3rds the thickness (and very quickly)for about 2 1/2 feet,but hey it worked well.Since then I have used this several times on different projects. I feel that if you buy this planer instead of any one of the more expensive big name brands you will not be disappointed. I would buy this same one again if needed.
Like the other reviewers, I am impressed with the quality, power and price. My first task was to take it to some 2 inch dried cherry boards which were quite badly warped. I kept it on the lowest settings to not wreck my wood and even then it did an admirable job of planing a lot of wood quite quickly. The only pain is the bag which is quite useless because it gets full right away and the sliding bar closure is also a pain to put back on. I took the bag off, directed the shavings away from me and vacuumed up the large pile of wood when I was done. The only thing I don’t know is how long the blades will last especially given how hard the cherry was that I went through. I will update the review once I have more time on the machine. But all in all, a good buy.

I have been using power planers on the job since the 1970’s and I don’t believe that I ever used one that did not perform well. The 4 3/8″ Makita planer I still own has been working for some 30 years now. I purchased this one because the high price of carbide blades for my wider format Makita. My decision for the Porter Cable was based upon favorable Amazon reviews and the low price. I can’t attest to the long term durability of this product since it is only been in my possession for about a year but it performs 100% as well as my Makita and other brands such as Bosch and Milwaukee that I routinely get to use in the field. So at least for those who only occasionally have the need for a power planer I see no reason to pay a lot more for similar more expensive brands. You will be getting professional level performance for a low price.
Thought there would be issues with this. I’ve always resisted the purchase because of the expense vs. use of a power planer. When I found this for $70 I thought I’d give it a shot. I was installing new doors in an old (very un-square) house. This tool took hours off of hand planing and was super comfortable to operate. Easily performed as well or better than $200 makita’s and DeWalts I’ve borrowed in the past.
Compared to a Festool planer, which gets a higher mark for it’s calibrated cutting metric or imperial, this is basic but GOOD at a fraction of the cost.It requires some skill to not run of the edge and dig. Side to side overlap planing is possible if you shim a side of it with blue tape. Power is adequate for fresh cut oak rough planks. I use it outside as there is a huge outflow of chips. The flat to direct them left or right can be confused. Still, what a bargain compared to anding. If you only used a crude hand plane you can use this. If you are used to fine planes, Japanese planes, you know those are high skill tools. This is for waring fast. Only cuts flat surfaces. I have’t found any blades for making textured flooring or paneling. This doesn’t bog down at all.

I am an experienced Do It Yourselfer type with appreciation for quality tools.Inatalling solid wood doors requires a planer. Originally purchased the popular Bosch 1594K with adjustable fence. I own many quality Bosch tools and have high regard for them.The Bosch 1594K was immediately returned when the fence could not adjust to 90 degrees. This is a show stopper #1. Show stopper #2 was that the two planes were not parallel. Show stopper #3 was that 0″ depth of cut was not 0″ depth. On top of that the plane surfacess were scratched and not exactly smooth.I can not believe Bosch designed this turkey, probably found one and attached their name to it.The Makita KP0800K by contrast was perfect. Solid, well made, smooth and as accurate as a planer in this price range can be. Smooth cuts, no digging at start and end of “run” (I forgot the word for this common problem). A great, smooth, easy to use planer. Wish I had bought one a long time ago.To aid me with the 2 to 3 degree beveling of door edges, I also ordered the Makita adjustable fence “Makita 123060-6 Bevel Guide For N1900B Planer” from Amazon of course. Despite the fence’s title, it is designed to ALSO attach to the Makita KP0800K not just the N1900B. This fence is solid, has large surface area and locks in the adjustment. And yes it adjusts to 90 degrees. By comparison the Bosch fence was complicated and not solid at all.We would all rather buy the $600 Porter Cable with 3 spiral cutters, but I’ll leave that to the pros that earn a living working solid wood door slabs. This Makita is an excellent well designed and built planer, an excellent value.
I have bought Makita tools in the past and have always been pleased with them. This works great and the primary reason I chose Makita over other brands is they had available as an option an angle guide. One of the primary purposes I use this for is beveling door edges and I would think that it would come included with the tool as it did when I bought a metabo planer 30 years ago. The Metabo worked fine but gave up the ghost after many years of service.
I’ve done woodworking for 50 years and am pretty good with hand tools, but this is an amazing timesaver, and can be used with a lot of finesse. I got this to clean up some large beams (6″ X 12″) that were too heavy and unwieldy to put through my stationary planer, and the results were exceptional. This planer also slices through end grain like butter and leaves a smooth result with no tear-out. Once you get used to it, you can use it on other than straight or flat surfaces: I used it to cleanup some shallow curves that I had bandsawed on the beams.

Typical Makita – just works like it is supposed to with good balance, ease of use, and durability. Had mine for several years, replaced the blades a couple of times – once from normal use and once from hitting a hidden nail (watch out for that!). Used in resurrecting a 1919 craftsman style home, mostly for trim work, but also shaving floor joists to level floors. Recommend getting the vac attachment and using it, since otherwise you will spend more time cleaning up than planing. This tool is really loud when in the cut, so ear protection (and goggles) are a must.
Almost twice the motor of the old Makita 3 1/4 inch planer, and a much slicker 260 or so degree turn adjustment with clearly labeled markings beats out the old screw-adjust system 10 to 1. the top of the adjustment wheel pops off frequently, but it’s not an issue as long as you’re aware that it happens. It’s got a nifty tang than hangs off the rear of the table to protect the knives and the fence can slide all the way over the knives without touching them, which is great for protecting their edge and your hands when in storage or even on the jobsite between uses.
This is the best portable planer on the market. I have a 16 year old Porter Cable (made in Italy) that has served me well and still going strong but the dust port sucks. I also have twi Bosch planers, including the 1594, and the Makita KP810 is by far my fav. The only negative is the this tool does not come with a carrying case.

I had a chance to try one of these at a friends house prepping beams for a timber frame and ordered one now that I’ve started doing larger timber work myself. Smooth tool! I have a 12″ Jointer, but this thing will be coming out in my shop for wider panel work to get the surface flat enough quickly after glue up to use hand planes and not spend half my life planing paneling to thickness by hand. Plus it can get a better finish surface in terms of tear out than kanna on difficult hemlock beams. Robust, well built, and with only two blades, not too slow to sharpen properly. Plus, it comes with the cool Japanese crate, a sign that the manufacturer gives a s*** about what’s inside.
You can tell this is a small volume specialized machine. It is not as polished and much more rugged than a tool you would buy from your local hardware store. It is more like a small hand held joiner. I use it to plane down large timbers from hardwood I cut and seasoned my self. (Cherry and Maple) These are too large to go through a normal planer / joiner. It is perfect for this.I just wish it would work with the newer carbide blades. In fact I have been considering having a clamp machined that would hold two carbide blades side by side. This seems a simple item for Makita to add.
Used this tool for several hours yesterday on long, cypress wood beams. Performed beautifully. Wear ear protection !!!The wooden box that houses the tool and accessories is sturdy, but the interior blocks were dislodged in shipping. I’d say that the shipping package was entirely inappropriate for such a heavy item. Fortunately the tool is tough. I’m positive that the tool was bouncing around loose inside the wooden box – no cushioning or retaining inserts whatsoever. It’s lucky for me that the wooden box was not broken.My hope is to find a set of carbide tipped blades for this tool.
